Education

Since the grand opening of RiverCenter in 2002, education has been an integral component of our mission. RiverCenter is proud to have served students and educators in our region with a variety of experiences and resources that integrate the arts into curriculum. Each season we have typically presented six titles in our ArtsReach Matinee series that are often  tied to great works of literature for young people. These theatrical events showcase innovative presentations of both literature and STEAM content. We believe that it is not sufficient to simply present high quality productions for school-age children, therefore each performance is accompanied by a standards-based study guide designed to make the pre and post-show experience more meaningful. Our matinees are presented at 9:30am and 11:30am and many of the titles have “sensory friendly” showings. These feature lower sound levels, brighter lighting, before-show tactile tours, a quiet room and trained volunteers.

Another of our educational initiatives is our RiverCenter on the Road series, which brings quality assembly programming into the classroom. Our RiverCenter on the Road experiences are some of our most unique. They save time, preserve educational “seat time” and have no transportation costs.

For the past few years, in early August RiverCenter has produced a day of arts integration training for teachers in Muscogee County. ArtsReach Teachers Institute sessions are facilitated by Georgia Council for the Arts-certified teaching artists, and demonstrate how to utilize the arts to teach across the curriculum.

Other ArtsReach activities include:

  • Artist residencies
  • Workshops and master classes for both students and educators
  • Pre and post-performance talks
  • Free concert events of select international touring ensembles

We are grateful to our sponsors who provide crucial funding to make these experiences possible:

While the Covid 19 crisis has forced us to pause these activities, we remain committed to providing them in the future, and eagerly anticipate the time when that can occur. If you would like to be notified when we resume operation, please send an email to: education@rivercenter.org
