Celebrating 25 Years of Arts, Culture, and Community in Columbus, GA

The mission of RiverCenter for the Performing Arts is to bring together a diverse range of artists and audiences for the entertainment, education, and enrichment of the cultural life of our region. For 25 years, RiverCenter has served as a gathering place where live performance connects people, sparks creativity, and strengthens the cultural fabric of Columbus, Georgia and the greater Chattahoochee Valley.

Located in the heart of historic Uptown Columbus, RiverCenter stands as the centerpiece of the city’s thriving arts and entertainment district. As we celebrate our 25th Anniversary season, we reflect on a vision that began with bold ambition: to establish Columbus as a destination for world-class performing arts. That vision has become a reality, welcoming more than three million patrons through our doors and hosting hundreds of acclaimed national and international artists.

A Vision Built by Community

RiverCenter was conceived as a vital cultural hub, designed to elevate and enrich the region through access to exceptional artistic experiences. The facility was designed by the internationally recognized architectural firm Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer and Associates, blending historic character with modern design to create a space that is both visually striking and highly functional.

Its construction was made possible through the Columbus Challenge, an unprecedented public-private fundraising effort that raised more than $100 million to revitalize the city’s cultural landscape. RiverCenter itself was funded in part by $86 million from that initiative, along with a $17 million state appropriation and a $25 million matching pledge from the Bradley-Turner Foundation. This collaborative investment reflects the deep commitment of the community to the arts and to the future of Columbus.

A Landmark of Design and Scale

At the heart of RiverCenter is the 2,000-seat Bill Heard Theatre, our primary venue. Designed to accommodate Broadway productions, concerts, dance, and large-scale performances, the theatre balances technical sophistication with audience comfort. Unique architectural elements, including interwoven steel mesh ceiling features and custom lighting, create a space that feels both grand and intimate.

Legacy Hall, the home of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, is at the center’s second-largest venue, offers a 430-seat setting known for its exceptional acoustics and elegant design. Featuring a wraparound balcony, rich wood finishes, and the acclaimed Jordan Concert Organ, the hall provides an ideal environment for chamber music, recitals, and smaller performances. The 150-seat Studio Theatre further expands RiverCenter’s versatility, offering a flexible black-box space for experimental work, rehearsals, and educational programming.

RiverCenter also serves as a home for the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University, housing rehearsal spaces and performance venues that support the next generation of artists.

A Stage for World-Class Artists

Since opening in 2002, RiverCenter has welcomed an extraordinary range of performers from across the globe. The stage has been graced by renowned classical artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Jessye Norman, alongside popular entertainers including David Copperfield and Wynonna. International ensembles and touring productions—from Cirque Éloize to Broadway hits like Chicago, Miss Saigon, and Cats—have made RiverCenter a consistent stop for premier touring acts.

Today, as we celebrate our 25th Anniversary, RiverCenter continues to build on that legacy with a season that reflects both its history and its future—bringing Broadway back to Columbus while expanding programming across music, dance, comedy, and family entertainment.

Community, Education, and Impact

RiverCenter is more than a performance venue. It is a cornerstone of the region’s cultural and educational landscape. As the home of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and the Schwob School of Music, the center plays a vital role in supporting local arts organizations and fostering artistic excellence within the community.

Through its ArtsReach program, RiverCenter extends its mission beyond the stage, providing students of all backgrounds with access to live performance experiences. For many young people in the region, these programs offer a first introduction to the arts, sparking curiosity, creativity, and lifelong appreciation.

Looking Ahead

For 25 years, RiverCenter has been a place where Columbus comes together—to celebrate, to learn, and to be inspired. As we look toward the future, our commitment remains the same: to bring world-class artists to our stage, to support our local arts community, and to ensure that the performing arts continue to thrive in the Chattahoochee Valley.

RiverCenter is not just a venue. It is a legacy built by community, sustained by creativity, and driven by the belief that the arts belong here.
